You asked for the recipe… 🤍 This is the tradition You asked for the recipe… 🤍 This is the traditional sepulchre incense pot, prepared during Holy Week in many Maltese homes and churches. A slow infusion of citrus, spice and herbs — deepened by Balsamo del Peru, a traditional balsamic resin that gives it its unmistakable depth. Ingredients: Oranges (studded with cloves) Lemons Apples Bay leaves Cinnamon sticks Coriander Fennel Aromatic herbs Orange water Sweet wine Balsamo del Peru Method: Simmer gently on low heat for several hours, allowing the scent to develop slowly. There is no exact formula - only variations, passed down quietly over time. During Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, a traditional incense mixture is left to simmer slowly — filling homes and churches with that unmistakable Holy Week atmosphere. This is the sepulchre incense pot — a blend of citrus, spice and herbs. 🌿🍊 It’s often mistaken for mulled wine or potpourri — but there’s one ingredient that gives it that unmistakable Holy Week depth. Inspired by the perfumes used to anoint Christ’s body before burial.🏺 Roy and I observe it quietly, in our own way — him at a considered distance (his nose far more discerning than mine), me lingering in the nostalgia. Every village, every family, carries its own variation.
